“Not Today” points to the strength of women and the resilience that we have to stand up to others who try to overpower and control us. — Lynn

On June 30, 2021, Lynn left her house to go on a run, when she was confronted by a total stranger, who was wearing a face mask. For seven minutes, he chased her down and eventually caught and attacked her. The assault shattered her leg, while the assailant got away. This chase and struggle is captured by the data from her Apple watch.

Data from Lynn’s Apple Watch documenting the 7 minutes of chaos as the survivor ran away from the perpetrator until he finally caught and attacked her.

Lynn reported the assault to law enforcement, who were not optimistic they would be able to find the perpetrator. While recovering from surgery, Lynn began searching the NextDoor app, sharing the perpetrator’s description to see if others may have been confronted by the same perpetrator.

To her surprise, she found other women who had encountered this perpetrator, including an instance of him watching a teenage girl through a fence and several instances of him touching himself or masturbating in front of women and children in public places.

Through the Next Door app, this group of women began collecting crucial pieces of evidence, including a photo of him masturbating and Ring video footage identifying his vehicle.

The group then made a flyer containing the locations of the different incidents across Austin. It also included the photo of him masturbating and a photo of his car. The locations of the attacks are shown on the right.

As a result, a woman who had seen the flyer encountered him on a walk, noted the description of his car, and memorized his license plate number.

This led to him being identified and arrested on December 10, 2021 for multiple other felony and misdemeanor cases, including Aggravated Assault causing Serious Bodily Injury for his attack on Lynn.

As a result of the collective action of these courageous Austin women, this serial sexual predator was apprehended.

“I was surprised that, as a victim, I had to have legal assistance and be strategic while navigating the system. As a first-time victim, I assumed my job was done after an arrest and justice would be served. Now, I realize that victims have to lead their own crusade, find their voice in the process, and stay engaged to be sure that all the dots are connected and that the various agencies stay in coordination with one another.” — Lynn

Our Community Showed Up

On April 25th our Austin community showed up to support the survivors and witness the allocution by Lynn, one of the brave survivors.

Following the sentencing, we testified and provided public comment to HB 3786 which would permit a victim to hire an attorney to represent them in order to enforce their Crime Victims’ Rights.
